When life gives you lemons, you can make way more than just lemonade.

I love lemons. They are so useful in every area of my life. Whether it be for flavour in food and drinks, the numerous health benefits, cleaning around the house and even in beauty treatments.
Lemons really are one of my most frequently used ingredient around my home and kitchen.

Here are my top 10 uses :

1. Food
So I’m sure you have had a great lemon drizzle or a lemon mayonnaise in a prawn sandwich, lemons are in 1000 of recipes world wide, both sweet and savoury. The zest is a great way to impart lemon flavour in to food, use a plain zester to get the best bits. A great quick recipe to try is lemon and pepper mayonnaise.

x 3 tablespoons of mayonnaise
x ½ zest of an unwaxed lemon zest
x1 teaspoon of cracked black pepper
x ½ lemon squeezed

Mix all together and enjoy with prawns, or cooked chicken with a tasty salad or in a granary bread sandwich- divine.

2. Drinks – Cocktails
Amaretto Sour- best drink ever!!!
x 1 1/2 shots Amaretto liqueur
x 1 shot simple syrup (dissolve an equal amount of sugar in water)
x 1 shot fresh lemon juice
x 1 orange slice
x 1 maraschino cherry
Pour the Amaretto, simple syrup, and lemon juice into a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake and strain into a glass filled with ice. Garnish with an orange slice and a cherry.

3. Health – A lemon a day keeps the doctor away.
I love having a lemon squeezed into lukewarm water every morning, not only does it freshen breath, cleanses the gut, alkalises the body when metabolised and flushes the blood of toxins…. as well as a whole host of other benefits.
squeeze 1 lemon into a cup of lukewarm water and enjoy throughout the morning. Due to the acid effect in the mouth after drinking a swill with mouthwash is advised.

4. Cleaning
Freshen up chopping boards with a cut lemon. rub the lemon on the chopping board and swill with hot water. it lifts dirt and grease and deodorises at the same time.

5. Food
Some foods turn brown when cut, this is due to an enzyme that reacts when exposed to oxygen. To reduce the browning, rub,dip or add lemon to these fruits or vegetables.
These include- avocado, especially when making guacamole, cut apples, bananas and cauliflower.

6. Health
Lemon is a fantastic antibacterial, so for example when you have a sore throat, try gargling a lemon, warm water and honey solution.

7. Beauty
Are you prone to spot breakouts? A lemon solution can help reduce blackheads and again for antibacterial reasons it cleanses skin. It is also a natural astringent to close pores.

8. Food
Ceviche is a typical Peruvian dish. Citrus juice is used to ‘cook’ the very thinly sliced fresh fish. Spiced with chilli and herbs the dish is amazingly fresh, vibrant and delicious, make sure you use the freshest fish possible, and no not throw away the lemon dressing. The juice is generally drank along side the food and is called tiger milk. Its a punch in the face flavour bomb, that I think you either love your hate, but at least give it a try…

x 500g firm white fish fillets, I love lemon sole or sea bass
x 6 limes and 4 lemons plus extra wedges to serve
x 1 red onion, sliced into rings
x 2-3 green chillies, finely chopped
x 2-3 tomatoes, seeded and chopped into 2cm pieces
x bunch coriander, roughly chopped
2 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil
good pinch caster sugar

In a glass bowl, mix the fish, lime juice and onion. The juice should completely cover the fish; if not, add a little more. Cover with clingfilm and place in the fridge for an hour and a 1/2.
Remove the fish and onion from the lime juice (keep the juice for tiger milk) and place in a bowl. Add the chilies, tomatoes, coriander and olive oil, stir gently, then season with a good pinch of salt and sugar. This can be made a couple of hours in advance and stored in the fridge. Serve with the tiger milk or if its a step too far a cold beer works wonders too.

9. Cleaning
Lemon is a great deodoriser, use in fridges, microwaves, kitchens, cat litter trays, anywhere where odours linger. For rubbish bins, place lemon peel of cut lemons in the bottom of the bin bag to neutralise odours.

10. Beauty
Lemon juice is a fantastic nail whitener. Soak nails in a strong lemon solution with water and dunk your digits in for a few minutes to whiten and clean.
So go ahead and get some Lemons in your life. you wont regret it!!
